Anzac Day | Grief and Hope

About halfway through the movie 1917 there is a haunting scene of exhausted young soldiers slumped down listening to one singing the song: “Wayfaring Stranger.”

It’s the view of World War 1 from from the perspective of an insignificant shell-shocked trooper in the trenches.
It's Anzac Day again, and many of us will rise early to recall the Great War and the millions of lives that were lost.

The human cost of World War 1 was enormous. More than 9 million soldiers and an estimated 12 million civilians died in the four-year-long conflict, which also left 21 million military men wounded.

There was also a human cost in a larger sense. The war remade the world for the worse in every conceivable way. It ignited the Russian Revolution, it laid the ground for Nazism. It made World War II pretty certain. It’s hard to imagine the second world war without the first. What is unmeasurable, is the huge personal and emotional toll on a generation in terms of ongoing grief and trauma.

Each generation — and each of us personally will in some way — experience grief and trauma. Whether its the loss of a loved one; or surviving a natural calamity like a massive bushfire or flood, or a life- threatening illness — or maybe by having the rhythms and hopes and dreams of our lives derailed by some unexpected and inescapable shock or crisis
— the great depression or nine-eleven for some, the repercussions of the COVID:19 crisis for others, the war in Ukraine or the Gaza crisis or grinding poverty or oppression.

Ave Maria | Bono & Pavarotti

Ave Maria

Where is the justice in this world?
The wicked make so much noise mother
The righteous stay oddly still
With no wisdom
All of the riches in the world
Leaves us poor tonight

And strength is not without humility
It's weakness and untreatable disease
And war is always the choice
Of the chosen
Who will not have to fight
Ave Maria

Ave Maria
Gratia plena
Maria gratia plena
Maria gratia plena
Ave ave Dominus
Te cum

And strength is not without humility
It's weakness and untreatable disease
And war is always the choice
Of the chosen
Who will not have to fight
Ave Maria

WHO BY FIRE | LEONARD COHEN

“Who by fire” is Leonard Cohen’s version of the Hebrew prayer "Unetanneh Tokef", chanted on Yom Kippur. It was released in the 1974 album “New Skin for the Old Ceremony.” This is one of the main songs of the album and one of Cohen’s best known songs.

The prayer Cohen heard as a child in the synagogue describes God reviewing the Book of Life and deciding the fate of every soul for the year to come – who will live, who will die and how. The line: “And who shall I say is calling?” can be understood as a break from faith in God. According to Cohen that element of doubt is what made the song into a personal prayer for him.

And who by fire, who by water
Who in the sunshine, who in the night time
Who by high ordeal, who by common trial
Who in your merry merry month of May
Who by very slow decay
And who shall I say is calling?

And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate
Who in these realms of love, who by something blunt
And who by avalanche, who by powder
Who for his greed, who for his hunger
And who shall I say is calling?

And who by brave assent, who by accident
Who in solitude, who in this mirror
Who by his lady's command, who by his own hand
Who in mortal chains, who in power
And who shall I say is calling?
And who shall I say is calling?

And who by fire who by water
Who in the sunshine, who in the night time
Who by high ordeal, who by common trial
Who in your merry merry month of May
Who by very slow decay
And who shall I say is calling?
And who shall I say is calling?

Rosh Hashanah | Book of Life | Deborah Conway & Willy Zygier

From the Album: 'Stories of Ghosts' (2013) by Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier

'Book Of Life' is track:3, from the album notes:

"... The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah is a time to blow the Shofar, a ram’s horn, and celebrate with apple and honey for a sweet New Year. Ten days later the sombre day of atonement, Yom Kippur, is a day of fasting and repenting for your sins of the previous year.

On Rosh Hashanah you will be inscribed in the book of life and on Yom Kippur you
will be sealed. Your fate for the next 12 months is written. “... who will live and who will die; who will die at his predestined time and who before his time; who by water and who by fire, who by sword, who by beast, who by famine, who by thirst, who by upheaval, who by plague, who by strangling, and who by stoning. Who will rest and who will wander, who will live in harmony and who will be harried, who will enjoy tranquillity and who will suffer, who will be impoverished and who will be enriched, who will be degraded and who will be exalted.”

We tried a number of versions of this song, James Black played a beautiful piano part, but ultimately the song needed to sound like a solitary prayer.

May you be written into the book of life.

They’ll Know We Are Christians by our Love

Jesus said something startling at the last supper, shortly before he died on the cross. As he prepares to send them out into the empire he says this:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13: 34-35 NIV)

The mark of the followers of Jesus living out the reign of God was love. In the midst of the empires of this world which are marked by fear and violence and hierarchy and consumption and acquisition and dominion and vengeance, they were to be marked as Jesus' disciples by their love and their unity (John 17).

After their Passover meal is over, they walked to Gethsemane and offered no resistance when the soldiers came to arrest Jesus. Peter was told to put down his sword rather than fight.

We are to be known as a sign of the coming Kingdom by our love and unity -- the people of Jesus.
***   ***   ***   ***
We are one in the Spirit,
we are one in the Lord,
We are one in the Spirit
we are one in the Lord,
And we pray that all unity
may one day be restored:

And they’ll know we are Christians
By our love, by our love,
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
By our love.

We will walk with each other
we will walk hand in hand
we will walk with each other
we will walk hand in hand
and together we’ll spread the news
that God is in our land:

Chorus

We will work with each other
we will work side by side
We will work with each other
We will work side by side
And we’ll guard each one’s dignity
and save each one's pride:

Chorus

All Praise to the Father
from whom all things come,
And all praise to Christ Jesus
His only Son,
and all praise to the Spirit
who makes us all one:

The Ancient of Days

By William Blake, 1794
In our troubled world with all it's uncertainties and anxieties and it's strong arrogant leaders it's good to remember Daniels's grand cosmic vision of the Ancient of Days ruling over all:

"I was considering the horns,* when another horn* appeared, a little one coming up among them; to make room for it, three of the earlier horns were plucked up by the roots. There were eyes like human eyes in this horn, and a mouth speaking arrogantly.

  As I watched,
thrones were set in place,
and an Ancient One took his throne,
his clothing was white as snow,
    and the hair of his head like pure wool;
his throne was fiery flames,
and its wheels were burning fire.
       A stream of fire issued
and flowed out from his presence.

A thousand thousands served him,
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him.
The court sat in judgment,
    and the books were opened.

I watched then because of the noise of the arrogant words that the horn was speaking. And as I watched, the beast was put to death, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. As I watched in the night visions,

I saw one like a human being
coming with the clouds of heaven.
And he came to the Ancient One
    and was presented before him.
    To him was given dominion
    and glory and kingship,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
    should serve him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
    that shall not pass away,
and his kingship is one
    that shall never be destroyed.

Daniel 7:8-14 (NRSCE)
horns are used as a metaphor for the strength of kings

Though the nations rage Kingdoms rise and fall There is still one king Reigning over all So I will not fear For this truth remains: That my God is, the Ancient of Days None above him, none before him All of time in His hands For His throne it shall remain and ever stand All the power all the glory I will trust in His name For my God is, the Ancient of Days Though the dread of night Overwhelms my soul He is here with me I am not alone O his love is sure And He knows my name For my God is, the Ancient of Days Though I may not see What the future brings I will watch and wait For the Saviour king Then my joy complete Standing face to face In the presence of the Ancient of Days

Hey there Mr. Blue!

It's Spring! The sun's been blazing in a pale blue sky. They're voting in America! What else could one want but a bit of genuine seventies kitsch? When the kids were little and we used to head off on our Spring holidays, we'd crank this song up in the car's cassette player and belt it out, with air guitar solos, as we hooned along.

Jeff Lynne (E.L.O.) talked about writing "Mr. Blue Sky" after locking himself away in a Swiss chalet and attempting to write ELO's follow-up to A New World Record: "It was dark and misty for 2 weeks, and I didn't come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, 'Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.' I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next two weeks."

So here it is, fresh from 1977, a kinder time when Jimmy Carter was president and everyone wore big flares, big hair, big beards and big pop-rock, Mr Blue Sky, the official psychedelic video!

One Thing Remains

[Verse 1]

Higher than the mountains that I face

And it's stronger than the power of the grave

Constant in the trial and the change

This one thing remains

[Chorus]

And Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

And Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

And Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

[Verse 2]

And on and on and on and on it goes

It overwhelms and satisfies my soul

And I'll never, ever, have to be afraid

'Cause this one thing remains

This one thing remains

[Chorus]

And Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

And Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

And Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

Your love, Your love

[Bridge]

And in death, and in life

I'm confident and covered by

The power of Your great love

My debt is paid

There's nothing that can separate

My heart from Your great love

[Chorus]

'Cause Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

Your love

[Verse 2]

And on and on and on and on it goes

It overwhelms and satisfies my soul

And I'll never, ever, have to be afraid

'Cause this one thing remains

This one thing, it remains, remains

[Chorus]

Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me

Your love

[Bridge]

And in death, and in life

I'm confident and covered by

The power of Your great love

My debt is paid

There's nothing that can separate

My heart from Your great love

[Instrumental]

Regina Spektor - "Laughing With God."

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one's laughing at God
When they're starving or freezing
Or so very poor

No one laughs at God when the doctor calls
After some routine tests
No one's laughing at God
When it's gotten real late
Their kid's not back from that party yet

No one laughs at God when their airplane
Starts to uncontrollably shake
No one's laughing at God
When they see the one they love
Hand in hand with someone else
And they hope that they're mistaken

No one laughs at God
When the cops knock on their door
And they say "We got some bad news, sir"
No one's laughing at God
When there's a famine, fire, or a flood...

But God could be funny
At a cocktail party while listening to
A good god-themed joke
Or when the crazies say he hates us
And they get so red in
The head you'd think they're about to choke

God could be funny
When told he'll give you money
If you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie
Who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket
And Santa Claus
God could be so hilarious
Ha-ha
Ha-ha

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one's laughing at God
When they've lost all they got
And they don't know what for

No one laughs at God on the day they realize
That the last sight they'll ever see
Is a pair of hateful eyes
No one's laughing at God
When they're saying their goodbyes

But God could be funny
At a cocktail party while listening to
A good god-themed joke
Or when the crazies say he hates us
And they get so red in
The head you'd think they're about to choke

God could be funny
When told he'll give you money
If you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie
Who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket
And Santa Claus
God could be so hilarious

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one's laughing at God in a war
No one's laughing at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one's laughing at God
When they're starving or freezing
Or so very poor

No one's laughing at God
No one's laughing at God
No one's laughing at God
We're all laughing with God

Hopeless Wanderer

MUMFORD & SONS

"Hopeless Wanderer"
You heard my voice I came out of the woods by choice
Shelter also gave their shade
But in the dark I have no name

So leave that click in my head
And I will remember the words that you said
Left a clouded mind and a heavy heart
But I was sure we could see a new start

So when your hope's on fire
But you know your desire
Don't hold a glass over the flame
Don't let your heart grow cold
I will call you by name
I will share your road

But hold me fast, Hold me fast
'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer
And hold me fast, Hold me fast
'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer

I wrestled long with my youth
We tried so hard to live in the truth
But do not tell me all is fine
When I lose my head, I lose my spine

So leave that click in my head
And I won't remember the words that you said
You brought me out from the cold
Now, how I long, how I long to grow old

So when your hope's on fire
But you know your desire
Don't hold a glass over the flame
Don't let your heart grow cold
I will call you by name
I will share your road

But hold me fast, Hold me fast
'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer
And hold me fast, Hold me fast
'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer
I will learn, I will learn to love the skies I'm under
I will learn, I will learn to love the skies I'm under
The skies I'm under

Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come

A Change Is Gonna Come" is a song by American singer-songwriter Sam Cooke. It initially appeared on Cooke's album Ain't That Good News, released mid-February 1964 by RCA Victor.

The song was inspired by various events in Cooke's life, most prominently when he and his entourage were turned away from a whites-only motel in Louisiana. Cooke felt compelled to write a song that spoke to his struggle and of those around him, and that pertained to the Civil Rights Movement and African Americans.

On October 8, 1963, en route to Shreveport, Louisiana, Cooke called ahead to the Holiday Inn North to make reservations for his wife, Barbara, and himself, but when he and his group arrived, the desk clerk glanced nervously and explained there were no vacancies. While his brother Charles protested, Sam was furious, yelling to see the manager and refusing to leave until he received an answer.

His wife nudged him, attempting to calm him down, telling him, "They'll kill you," to which he responded, "They ain't gonna kill me, because I'm Sam Cooke." When they eventually persuaded Cooke to leave, the group drove away calling out insults and blaring their horns. When they arrived at the Castle Motel on Sprague Street downtown, the police were waiting for them, arresting them for disturbing the peace.

The New York Times ran a report the next day, headlined "Negro Band Leader Held in Shreveport," but African-Americans were outraged. In 2019, then-Shreveport mayor Adrian Perkins apologized to Cooke's family for the event, and posthumously awarded Cooke the key to the city.

Upon hearing Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" in 1963, Cooke was greatly moved that such a poignant song about racism in America could come from someone who was not black. Cooke loved Dylan's song so much it was immediately incorporated into his repertoire. He was further influenced by the message of the dream in Martin Luther King Jr's 'I Have a Dream' speech at the civil rights march on Washington that year. Toward the end of 1963, according to Cooke, the Change composition came to him in a dream.

“A Change Is Gonna Come”
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will.

It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will.

I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me don't hang around
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will.

Then I go to my brother
And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knockin' me
Back down on my knees.

There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will.

"Everybody knows" by Leonard Cohen & Sharon Robinson

Leonard Cohen's bitterly pessimistic song about the state of the world in the late 1980s. When he first introduced the song, he said, "Here's a terrible new song. Yes, it embodies all my darkest thoughts. Here it comes."

In regards to the verse about the plague, Cohen said in an interview, "The plague in the most physical sense is AIDS. But there's another kind of plague going on too, of which AIDS is one of the symptoms. If indeed disease does have ultimately a psychic origin, then there's a plague of alienation and separation and lassitude and panic; a sense of not being in control."

Listening to it again in 2020, and to Sigrid's haunting version for Justice League especially:
"... Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
    Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died..."

and
"...And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast ..."

I suspect the sense of ominous bleakness still resonates.
We may not have a "meter on our bed", but we all have an App!
